366 Days 406 Movies 267 Posts 2012 As It Was For Me

366 Days 406 Movies 267 Posts 2012 As It Was For Me

So this is somewhat of a tradition around here to end the year with a post looking back at the year on the blog. I wont get much into the specifics of 2012, but I will say that this year has gone SO FAST. I know it sounds cliché but it literally does feel like just yesterday that I was writing my post like this last year. It really does. However, Im beyond excited for 2013. So many opportunities await me: in a week, Ill be going to Japan, then theres all the Head Girl duties, and also, we have another good year for film on our hands. Just maybe, at the Oscars in February, I might see Jessica Chastain with a statue (Oscar or not, Im excited to see what she wears). Matthew McConaughey may blow our minds with The Dallas Buyers Club (heres hoping). Ill finally get to see films like The Perks of Being a Wallflower (maybe), Zero Dark Thirty, Silver Linings Playbook, Les Miserables, Django Unchained...and also my most anticipated 2013 releases like The Great Gatsby, The Place Beyond the Pines, Only God Forgives, The Dallas Buyers Club, The Wolf of Wall Street, The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby His & Hers, Iron Man 3, Now You See Me, Side Effects, the two Terrence Malick films, Twelve Years a Slave, Mud...the list could go on and on. So before I wave 2012 goodbye - and it has been a mostly fantastic year - it is time to look back on the best moments on this blog, month by month. This year Ill also add what songs were my faves during that particular month.

January - What If We Could? by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross
As with most Januarys, this month was filled up with Oscar Oscar Oscar. Before then, though, I finally left the country and went to Melbourne for a holiday, which also meant I could catch up with a few movies while I was over there. Oh and hey, I became the literal only person on Earth to love War Horse. I still like to remind people of its glorious existence because most people have forgotten about it.

February - Man or Muppet by Bret McKenzie
Oh hey, the Oscars happened this month. It feels like just yesterday I saw Jessica Chastain in that beautiful gown. Again, that makes up for 75% of my excitement for the 2013 Oscars. I did my predictions with poetry again this year. I cant wait to hopefully have enough time to do them again next year. I also brought back my A Conversation with... feature with The Beaver. I remember that day, as that was when I found out that I was gluten intolerant. Good times. I also changed my rating system. I was watching the Downton Abbey Christmas special when I did that.

March - Under Your Spell by Desire
This month started out awesome, coz I was supposed to be directing the school production, but at the end of the month they cancelled it. I was actually so sad for days. Mind you, this month was kinda known as Jessica Chastain month (even though every month of my life is Jessica Chastain month), since it was her birthday, and I got to see The Debt and Take Shelter. I also started another feature, known as Lame Trailer Clichés, with kettles. Really.

April - Talk Show Host by Radiohead
April was an interesting month, filled with many gems of posts. This Conversation with Puss in Boots has always been one of my favourites. So is this review of I Melt with You, which I still have a few LOLs over every now and again. I also did my 50 Cinematic Wishes, had an interview with the Kid in the Front Row, made a desperate plea to anyone who would listen about how The Cabin in the Woods shouldve been given a proper release here, and I saw The Avengers, which was apparently very exciting.

May - No Church in the Wild by Kanye West and Jay Z (featuring Frank Ocean)
It would seem that I was nominated for a whole lot of LAMMYs at the end of this month. That was really exciting. I started off the month with this review of Tyrannosaur, which is probably my favourite review that Ive written. I also wrote about how The Muppets was actually a very gutsy movie, shared some of my early photos I took and listed my ten favourite Cillian Murphy performances.

June - Unravelling by Harry Escott
June was a real gem of a month. I got a couple of LAMMYs, I did my French New Wave month, I shared my 15 favourite redheads, for my 900th post I shared some blogging tips, I saw Shame, and I also did that 100 Film Facts About Me post which unintentionally (but awesomely) turned into a blogathon. I am so proud of how this month went, but it makes me sad because Ill never be able to have another month like it.

July - Rise by Hans Zimmer
July, however, was probably my favouritest month ever. Mainly because it had the best DVD releases EVER. I mean, one night I took home six movies to watch before they were released, and on another day I watched five releases. One of those releases was We Need to Talk About Kevin, which caused two earthquakes and made me fall in love with Ezra Miller. I did my Anime month, even before I knew I was going to Japan. I posted my speech online...which for some reason, people still talk about. I started my Dear Hollywood feature with J. Edgar. I finally got to see The Dark Knight Rises, which also saw me write an appreciation post on Christopher Nolan. Before I went on my "Im burnt out" break, I finally did my 2011 retrospective lists, with my favourite directors, actors, actresses and films.

August - Why Do We Fall? by Hans Zimmer
This month wasnt very exciting as I spent most of it on break (and watching the Olympics until I felt like my eyes were going to bleed), but I was brought back when I got nine of those Liebster Award things, so I had to answer a crapload of questions. I turned 17, too, which was rather un-exciting (bring on 18!). And I really got obsessed with Ezra Miller. And I did this really weird post.

September - Its Time by Imagine Dragons
Pretty much nothing happened on the blog in September because I was too busy with Little Shop of Horrors. I did do some funny Photoshops, though.

October - Radio by Lana Del Rey
Things got back on track in October, with my horror month keeping me on my toes (ironically while I was dipping my toes), and also the third birthday celebrations, which were counted down to by My Movie Biography. Among other things that happened in this month were my Prometheus home musical (which my friends now use against me when I say that Im actually awful at singing), I saw Margaret, and I did some more funny Photoshops the night before my Photography Folio was due, which is when I coincidentally got really sick with a virus. Lovely.

November - Ride by Lana Del Rey
IDK why, but this month feels like it was years ago. However, Nic November happened, I made a very pretty gallery of my favourite colourful movies, and I also did my movie alphabet. There were a few birthdays this month, so I listed my favourite performances from Leonardo DiCaprio and shared a brief biography and a few facts about Vivien Leigh. Plus, I saw Killer Joe on the 13th of November, which means that was the very date that Matty M went from zero to hero in my heart.

December - Victim by Win Win
This month has been so incredibly difficult but there were a few good points on the blog, including this review of Magic Mike which Im rather fond of, I did my first blogathon which was called Making the Case and I reached 1000 posts. Recently Ive been reflecting on the year, with things like my unofficial favourites of the year and my obsessions of the year.

So theres 2012 for ya. This also marks the end of an era for Cinematic Paradox: while Ill be around in 2013, itll be to a much lesser extent, since school is really going to be busy this year. Still, Ill be working hard at Annual Awards Nerdism for the next two months! I hope you all have a wonderful 2013, and lets make it awesome!

6 Signs That Youve Made It To Middle Class

6 Signs That Youve Made It To Middle Class

In the August 27, 2010 Investopedia.com article "6 Signs That Youve Made It To Middle Class," James E. McWhinney says you are middle-class if you (1) own a home, (2) own a car, (3) send your children to college, (4) save money for retirement, (5) have health care coverage, and (6) have enough income for family vacations.

Not so long ago, most people viewed the hallmarks of success as something along the lines of a house, a white picket fence, two weeks vacation, two children and the ability to send those kids to college. Today, the middle class is a vanishing breed according to nearly every survey and statistic on the topic. Its disappearance is of such grave concern to the fabric of American society that the U.S. government launched a task force to explore the issue. Despite all of the attention to the subject, defining "middle class" remains a challenge, as everyone wants to be in the middle regardless of their income. Instead of focusing on the dollars, lets take a look at the lifestyle benchmarks that define middle class status.

Have You Made it to the Middle?
A wide variety of numbers have been thrown around in an effort to define the middle. People earning 20% of the average income and people earning 80% all claim to be part of the middle class. More than a few millionaires make the claim too. While there is no official financial standard, the middle class as defined by the government task force is characterized in terms of six financial aspirations, which we can view as benchmarks.

Home Ownership
Home ownership remains the American dream. The step up from renting to owning signifies prosperity and achievement. With median home prices ranges differing by so much in different cities across the United States, the ability to achieve this goal varies significantly by geographical location. Someone earning an income in the 50% range in Detroit may not be able to afford even a small house in Los Angeles.

Automobile Ownership
Owning an automobile provides freedom of movement and the luxury of avoiding the limited schedules and cramped quarters offered by mass transportation options such as buses and subways. Here again, the cost of cars varying widely, as does the kind of automobile required. For one driver, a used Hyundai will do the trick. For another, a new BMW signifies the achievement of this goal.

A College Education for the Kids
Helping children get ahead in life is a primary goal for middle class families. Paying for a college education for children can cost anywhere from the low tens of thousands of dollars to hundreds of thousands. Decisions about which university of college to attend can have a significant impact on the price tag.

Retirement Security
Retirement is a goal nearly everyone wants to achieve. It demonstrates success and provides a reward for decades of hard work. Once again, definitions make a difference. The amount of gold required to support your golden years will vary significantly depending on whether you want a staff of 10 at your villa in the South of France or a townhouse in Peoria, Illinois.

Health Care Coverage
The ability to obtain healthcare is an important goal for middle class wager earners and their families. The high and rising cost of medical care and prescription drugs make healthcare coverage an ever-increasing need, as going without it can have serious negative financial implications in the event of a severe illness or injury.

Family Vacation
The family vacation is a middle class staple. Vacations demonstrate that a family has disposable income and has been successful enough to take time away from work to focus on leisure.

What Happened on the Way to the Dream?
Globalization and technological advances began to reverse the growth of the middle class. The manufacturing base in the United States changed, as good-paying jobs in factories and heavy industries went overseas to lower-paying markets and labor unions lost much of their ability to bargain for high wages and good benefits. Later, white-collar jobs from accounting and data entry to reading medical images and answering telephones in call centers were also sent offshore. Many jobs that remained in the U.S. were eliminated by computers and other technological advancements that increased productivity.

To achieve or maintain a middle-class lifestyle, many households became two-income families. Achieving middle class goals became more difficult as employers eliminated their pension plans and defined-benefit plans, the cost of a college education continued to rise and the cost of healthcare jumped. For most of the 20-year period following 1990, the Commerce Department reports that real median income grew at a rate of about 20%, while the cost of a college education grew between 43% and 60%, the cost of housing rose 56% and healthcare costs jumped by 155%.

How to Get There
Although there are significant challenges to obtaining middle class status, there are some proactive steps that can help make the dream a reality. Budgeting is one of the most obvious. Understanding where your money goes each month can help you determine the exact makeup of the benchmarks you are trying to match. Are you looking for a Hyundai or a BMW?

Planning is another crucial step. Are the kids going to a state university or a private college? Are scholarships an option? Some savvy families find money for college by participating in programs which can aide families with the costs related to sending a child to university.

Working is another one of the requirements. A second job or a side business might be just what you need to boost your income and achieve some of your goals. Putting your money to work is also an important consideration. Investing has helped build wealth for generations. In fact, income earners ranked in the top 1% enjoyed significant increases in wealth even as the middle class fell into decline. Most of that wealth came from investments. Even if you dont have the means to invest for current income, you can take a few dollars from each paycheck and save for your retirement.

The Bottom Line
Dont underestimate the role of hard work and luck. Sometimes being in the right place at the right time or taking one particular course of action over another can make all the difference. So keep watching for opportunities and make the most of them when you find them. As motion-picture mogul Samuel Goldwyn said, "The harder I work, the luckier I get."

10 reasons why your Wi Fi is so slow and how to fix it

10 reasons why your Wi Fi is so slow and how to fix it

wifi

Wi-Fi is the way of the world now. It is the invisible friend who comforts us, allows us to rock on Netflix in bed, and equips us to work from anywhere at any time. Wi-Fi is pretty much a necessity these days. Sometimes, however, the relationship becomes sour - especially when Wi-Fi slows down at a pace. When you depend on Wi-Fi, speed problems can be harmful. Unfortunately, speed issues are not always easy to diagnose due to Wi-Fi operation. An unknown variable could potentially reduce your Wi-Fi speed in half, so its important to know what to look for when something goes wrong not. Knowing this, we can now explore some of the lesser-known reasons why your Wi-Fi is so slow - and the best ways to solve these problems.

Router_positioning_High_low
1. Router positioning: High vs low

Most people underestimate the importance of choosing a good place for a Wi-Fi router. Even a small change in positioning could end up being the difference between day and night.

If you are like most people, you probably unpacked your new router, located at the exit of the reasonable location, plugged in, and simply left on everything that was nearby: a shelf, desk, or even floor. As it stands, the routers height makes a difference.

This means that your router leaving on the ground or other objects behind usually results in significantly worse performance. Instead, put the router as high as possible to extend the range of broadcast waves. This also makes it possible to remove the router from possible interferences.

2. Router positioning: Concrete & metals

Materials such as concrete and metal tend to be the worst for blocking Wi-Fi waves, but even objects from other materials can hinder the high wireless performance. Make sure that your router is not blocked by other objects, especially electronic devices.

Also, avoid placing your router in your basement as this area is usually surrounded by a lot of concrete, which can be almost impossible for Wi-Fi signals to penetrate.

3. Router positioning: Distance to router

The further away you are from your router, the lower the Wi-Fi signal. Therefore, the best option is to place your router as close to your devices as possible, but this is only convenient if you have a main area where you tend to use your devices.

Otherwise, you should place your router near the center of your house. After all, Wi-Fi broadcasts 360 degrees, so it does not make sense to put it at one end of the house.

However, if your router is particularly weak or your home is particularly large, you may need to increase the range of these Wi-Fi waves by using Wi-Fi extensions or repeaters. These are auxiliary devices that connect to the Wi-Fi network. Router and "repeat" the signal so that it covers more surface.

If you want to get really scientific on your router site, take a look at this project from a doctoral student and download the application to try it out for yourself.

4. Wireless interference & noise

You probably have never noticed, but there are wireless signals everywhere you go and they go through you all the time. From where? Electronic devices, Wi-Fi routers, satellites, cellular towers, etc.

Information designer Richard Vijgen has created "The Architecture of Radio" - available on iOS and Android - that uses public information on satellites and cell towers, as well as Wi-Fi information, to create a map of All the invisible signals around you. I tried this out and you can see the results of my essay in the screenshot above.

Although Wi-Fi is assumed to be on a different frequency than most of these devices, the amount of radio noise may still cause interference.

5. Microwaves can cause interference

Did you know that microwave ovens can cause interference with your Wi-Fi network? Especially with older routers. This is because microwave ovens operate at a frequency of 2.45 GHz, which is incredibly close to the 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi band.

Specifically, the 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi band actually broadcasts between 2.412 GHz and 2.472 GHz, there are times when the frequency of microwaves can overlap with the Wi-Fi frequency - and when this occurs, Transferred data is disrupted.

Most microwaves are properly protected so that no waves should be detected outside the oven, but when there is a faulty or bad shield, this is where interference may occur.

6. Wireless interference: Bluetooth devices

It turns out that another preferred type of wireless connection - Bluetooth - also happens to operate at 2.4 GHz. In theory, a properly designed device must be shielded in a manner that prevents interference.

In addition, in order to avoid the frequency clash, Bluetooth manufacturers use frequency hops, which is where the signal rotates randomly between 70 different channels, changing up to 1,600 times per second. Newer Bluetooth devices may also have the ability to identify "bad" or currently in use channels and avoid those.

But interference can still occur, so try to move the router away from Bluetooth devices (or at least turn them off) to see if this is the cause of your problems - especially if they are older Bluetooth devices without management channels.

Wireless_interference_Christmas_lights

7. Wireless interference: Christmas lights

Fairly funny, Christmas lights (or fairy lights) can be a misguided guilty by slowing down your Wi-Fi because these lights can emit an electromagnetic field that interacts with your Wi-Fi band. This is especially bad when you Use lights with the ability to blink.

You are not even safe with modern LED lights because some of them have flashing chips built into each lamp, and these create an interfering electromagnetic field.

In reality, all other types of lights can cause interference by emitting electromagnetic fields like this, but the effect is almost negligible in most cases. However, you must keep your router away from electric lights just in case.

Check_Channel_interference

8. Check for Channel interference

A modern world truth is that every household has its own Wi-Fi network, which can cause problems with channel overlap. This can be somewhat problematic in a townhouse but is particularly problematic in residential complexes and apartments where there may be a lot of routers nearby.

Channel overlap is mostly a problem for routers that can only broadcast at 2.4 GHz, or if you have devices that can not receive a 2.4 GHz wireless signal. Why? Because there are only 14 channels to broadcast on. Two routers broadcasting on the same channel at the same frequency will interfere.

This is why it is important that you choose a good channel in your router settings. Modern routers can automatically choose channels for you, but it is sometimes best to explore and find the best channel yourself.

In addition, people can try to get on your network without your knowledge, and this can also slow down your Wi-Fi. The most important thing you can do about this is to make sure your router does not A password easy to break. Also, keep your router up to date and perform regular checks on suspicious devices on your network.

Prioritize_network_traffic

9. Prioritize network traffic

Have you ever left a massive download running on your PC? Well, in this case, you are probably the cause of your own slow Wi-Fi. Downloading large files can take a long time on your Wi-Fi performance. Sometimes this can not be avoided - updates Of the operating system can be huge, for example - but if you are performing tasks that are not urgent, try to stop them.

More likely, however, is that people on your network - like friends, roommates or family members - participate in the bandwidth of heavy activities like Netflix games and streaming. Fortunately, if this is the case, you can prioritize your own network traffic by enabling quality of service in your router settings.

Water_can_slow_down_radio_waves

10. Bonus fact: Water can slow down radio waves

Humans are 60% water ... and water can slow down the radio waves. Although I do not suggest that you remove all people from your home, make sure your router is kept out of the main areas where people are gathering. The impact will not be terrible, but it could be noticeable.

90s Teen Idols Hunks Edition Yes I Said It Hunks

90s Teen Idols Hunks Edition Yes I Said It Hunks

It may seem easy these days to pick on the dog-whistle declibly screechy screaming hordes of Justin Bieber fans, but mainly because many of us girls have selectively blocked out memories of our own embarrassing teen idol worship. Back in our adolescent years, we did more than our fair share of shrieking over tame pin-up celebrity teen centerfolds ripped from BOP! or J17 magazine. Embarrassing? Yes. Escapable? No. Nostalgic? Absolutely.

Teen stars usually have a capable team of managers and industry experts who specialize in issuing their clients as a palatable brand: The Bad Boy, The Sensitive One, The Free Spirit. The 90s boy band boom specialized in this sort of one-dimensional projection of celebrity personality, condensing full people into an exclamation mark-laden photo caption in a teen magazine fluff piece. These brief blurbs were practically irrelevant to young girls, though--we were far more interested in collecting the tear-out posters and plastering our walls with their dreamy likenesses.

All you heterosexual male children of the 90s may just have to hold your tongues on this one--or rather, your impulsively commenting typing fingers. Yes, this is admittedly incredibly girly fare, but it was in its own way a thriving industry throughout the decade. Some of us spent inordinate quantities of time and resources collecting airbrushed publicity photos and devouring carefully managed and processed information about these young male celebrities. As a female child of the 90s, its still a little tough to repress my swooning reflex at these photos. That said, Im open to taking bids from male blogging volunteers to detail the other side of the teen idol coin. Oh, and by bids I mean just send me an email and well talk. Thanks.

Until that point, here is our squealing, giddy side of the teen idol story:

Jonathan Taylor Thomas

Best known for his role as Randy Taylor from the TV show Home Improvement, Jonathan Taylor Thomas was a major young commodity in the 90s. He cemented his young appeal with family-friendly roles in films like Tom and Huck, Man of the House, Ill Be Home for Christmas,
and The Lion King. Plus, he had that hair. My god, that hair. 90s teen idols really knew how to lay on the mousse.

Devon Sawa

One glance at Sawa in Little Giants or as the human version of the animated ghost Casper and we fell hard. Add to that the glimpse of his butt during the naked-boys-running-through-the-woods segment of Now and Then and youve got yourself a serious celebrity crush.

Leonardo DiCaprio

Now heres a child star with staying power. Leonardo DiCaprio has maintained respectable and relatively incident-free fame since his breakthrough role on Growing Pains. Following his roles in Romeo + Juliet and especially Titanic, teen girls worldwide broke out in contagious fits of floppy hair-induced Leo-Mania.
In atypical teen idol form, though, DiCaprio shunned his "Tiger Beat" image and sought credit as a legitimate actor. A 2000 Time article explains:

"...DiCaprio still thinks of himself as an edgy indie actor, not the Tiger Beat cover boy. "I have no connection with me during that whole Titanic phenomenon and what my face became around the world...Although its got to hurt deep inside, DiCaprio says hes at peace with being usurped by the Backstreet Boys. Ill never reach that state of popularity again, and I dont expect to, he says. Its not something Im going to try to achieve either. Instead, he has spent his post-Titanic life avoiding interviews."

It certainly didnt hurt him any; DiCaprio has since achieved an impressive acting resume, boasts numerous award nominations and wins, and has dated scores of supermodels. All in all, Id say he came out of teen stardom pretty well.

Jared Leto

I dont care if you are on Team Brian Krakow--you have to admit Leto as the rebellious and near-illiterate Jordan Catalano on My So-Called Life was worthier of our swooning affections. Leto went on to appear in films such as Requiem for a Dream and achieved musical fame as lead singer/songwriter/guitarist for the band 30 Seconds to Mars. Its hard to believe that this former teen star is now 38 years old. Really. 38. Id always sort of thought I had a chance with him, so Im shocked to learn that when I was idolizing him at age 10, he was already in his mid-20s.

Hanson

Take heed, Jonas Brothers: youre next. Brothers? Check. Religious? Check. Endearingly floppy hair? Check. Its like looking into the future. Truthfully, the Hanson brothers werent nearly as persistently chart-topping, but their hit "MMMBop" established them as serious contenders for teen idoldom.

Backstreet Boys and *NSYNC

These two groups deserve far more than a fleeting mention, but as this is a compilation post thats the best they can expect to get. These rival harmony-rich tightly managed boy bands dominated the pop music scene in the 90s, both catering to the same general screaming young girl fan base. The record companies and teen magazines portrayed each band member as a specific and easily definable "type," featuring characters like The Sensitive Guy and The Baby of the Group. Incidentally, these characters were actually real people, but for years they resided pretty comfortably in a describable space of 100-200 words.

Rider Strong

Ill say it again: teen stars in the 90s had the best hair. It wasnt too featherily androgynous like in the 70s or bat-poop crazy a la Flock of Seagulls in the 80s. Rider Strong had great 90s hair, though he and Will Friedle probably could have duked it out for the title of most attractive Boy Meets World cast member while hair is blowing gently in the breeze.

Andrew Keegan

We met Keegan as a camper in the Home Alone-esque summer flick Camp Nowhere, after which he made the rounds on the requisite teen-dream guest part circuit in shows like Full House, 7th Heaven, and Party of Five. Add a dash of satirical modeldom in 10 Things I Hate about You and youve got yourself a teen star. His acting career may not be accelerating at the rate it did in his younger days, but his fame will undoubtedly live on through the ceaseless rerunning of 10 Things on television.

Luke Perry and Jason Priestley

These two were both beloved by teens for their respective roles on Beverly Hills, 90210. At the time they seemed the epitome of the cool teenager, which is somewhat ironic considering they were both in their 20s at the time. Yes, these two former heartthrobs are currently in their 40s. How old does that make you feel? Dont fight it, it will only hurt more. Embrace your aging teen dreamboats.

Some remain famous and others have faded into obscurity, but theyre forever ingrained in our memories as teen idols. In some cases, their likenesses are still attached to the walls of our childhood rooms, cementing their stardom for posterity. Believe me, if I could plaster my current walls with old foldouts of Andrew Keegan and Luke Perry, I would. Really. I wonder if eBay is a viable marketplace for Tiger Beat magazine circa 1996...

3 Ways I Help Myself When I Lose My Weigh Get it

3 Ways I Help Myself When I Lose My Weigh Get it

The real world has been kicking my butt this week. I am so, so tired. I normally thrive and appreciate the hectic days in my office, but this week they are drowning me. I am normally liberated at new blogging opportunities and posts, but this week they are exhausting me. My mom was in town Monday through yesterday, which helped, and was so nice to have. I let loose a little and enjoyed time with her.

What has been bothering me most-- a lot of the reason why I am more tired than usual, and why I have had so much trouble sleeping lately is my RLS (Restless Leg Syndrome). I was diagnosed in February. I started showing symptoms a year before though, but they were sporadic and did not happen often. At the time, I attributed the symptoms to overworking myself at the gym.

It feels like ever since I was diagnosed I have issues nearly every night when I get into bed, which is horrible for me because I absolutely love sleep, and I ensure I get plenty of it nightly. It is rare that I let anything interfere with my sleep schedule. For my RLS, I have been on prescribed medication from my doctor as well engaging in a plethora of "home remedies" that my friends and readers have advised to me. Most of the time, that entire combination helps, but sometimes it doesnt.

Saturday and last night it did not. I was up all night in so much pain. It is so hard to describe the pain to people: it is not an ache or pulled muscle type of pain, it is nerve pain. It is agony to lay still. The only relief I find is when I get up and walk around; which last night I did until 2 in the morning. By then, all of my sleep medication kicked in and knocked me out. Which is great, but I have felt horrible today: fatigued, unable to concentrate, falling asleep at my desk, and my RLS pain is still active. It carried on from the night and is still hurting as I am in my office. I keep getting up to stretch my legs that provides provides relief, but the pain sneaks right back in when I become still.

Being sleep deprived affects me more than others sometimes. A lot of people are used to it, and their bodies and mind have adjusted. Unfortunately, I am not at that stage. Since I am a very high energy, outgoing, nonstop kind of person, I wear myself out a lot. I have admitted that on here many times. My remedy is sleep. When I am deprived from this, I can maybe be a bit dramatic and overbearing. Hell, I may even act like a 2 year old who needs a nap. I admit it, though. I am not proud. It is just one of my many flaws.

I was dealing with the sleep deprivation over the weekend and on Monday and now I am back again plowing through it today. When I feel this way, it makes me lose sight of everything. I am a person who has never had balance in their life. It has always been all or nothing. Thus, over the past year, I have been working extensively to teach myself a life balance.

I have gotten so, so much better, but I am still not where I want to be.

When I find myself slipping and losing my way-- losing vision of my goals, I need motivation to help me get over this internal negativity.

Below is what I have done to help lately. It may be "over the top" to some, but for me, its perfect. I am a woman on a mission, I am a woman who is fighting emotional eating, and I am a woman who still has 30 pounds to lose. I am also a woman who is working on improving the way I handle tasks and stress.

Some of us truly need this extra, grandiose motivation.

Food Motivation:

Print that picture above (I think the black background and white font just make it so intense and like its really challenging you) and put it on your refrigerator, near your purse and/or wallet, at your desk-- wherever you need too.

It may sound silly, but I promise you it works. There is nothing quite like reaching for that slice of chocolate cake after you already had a slice yesterday, and seeing something like that. It ruins the mood. It kills the cravings.

I am all about losing weight the healthy way-- a person needs their occasional bad food and cheat meal(s), however, if youre like me and stress eat, binge when life gets hard, or just have an issue with saying "no" to bad foods more often than you want to admit, something like this will help. It is a reminder of the measures you are taking to try and lose weight and become healthier.

Seeing something that like that puts my journey into perspective for me when a bad day or overbearing food craving start to take over and cloud my judgement.

Exercise Motivation:

I love to exercise. The high that comes from sweating and pushing your bodys limits while blasting your favorite music, to me, is indescribable. I absolutely love training.

But sometimes, my case of the "blahs" after a long day of work or stress, outweigh my my love for exercise. That is when I have to dig deep inside of myself and kick my own ass. Which is unbelievably hard as I am sure most of you know. That is why it can be so difficult to stay motivated.

When this happens, you have to look deep within yourself. It is not easy. This is the number 1 one reason why so many people give up on their weight loss journey: the lack of self-motivation. Motivation cannot be bought. Motivation cannot be taken with a glass of water to start your day each morning.

Motivation comes from constantly cheering yourself on and making yourself mentally stronger. That is why I think the above picture is perfect to print and keep for those days when you lose sight, and most importantly, when you lose hope.
  • I started because everyday I could not look in the mirror without crying.
  • I would shower with the lights off because my naked body disgusted me.
  • I started because I was in Target trying on a size 18 in pants that did not fit and I broke down.
  • I started because I felt so tired all of the time.
  • I started because my passion and work ethic for life dissipated on a daily basis..
  • I started because I wanted to FEEL good about myself.
When I remember how bad I used to feel, and how desperately I wanted to change, it helps me push on. I may be weary, I may be cussing and crying, but I push on.

Eventually, you reach the finish line. You pushed yourself: you made healthy choices, and you attended that workout you so vehemently wanted to miss. That is when everything changes. The endorphins are pumping, your confidence is built back up, and you now how the strength to keep going.

Goal Motivation

There is nothing that makes a journey so real than seeing what you could be-- what you WILL be. One thing I have done for years now and continue to do, is carry pictures of my favorite fitness inspirations; be it on my phone, on my refrigerator, desk, or somewhere in my home. My two favorite women are Ava Cowan and Pauline Nordin. They remind me that what I want is possible if I work hard enough. When my passion for fitness began in late 2008, those two women stood out to me more in the magazines than anyone else. I have been inspired ever since.

If they can do it, damn it, so can I. They are women and I am a woman. Its simple-- if I put in the work and dedication, I will get the same results.
