A Declaration of Love for My Favorite Leafy Green Vegetable
Is kale still cool? Or is the ubiquitous fluffy green cultivar it too "mainstream" now? Its pretty much everywhere but to be honest, I aint complaining. So yes: much like kale, Im not sure where society stands on ironic sweatshirts. No matter. This is how Ive chosen to live.
I do feel like a bit of a hypocrite-- I didnt wear this outfit to eat a salad or tend to a garden of some sort: I wore it to grab some ice cream at Little Babys. (It was avocado though, so it wasnt all bad.) To class it up, I paired it with my favorite long camel blazer. Then, to dress it back down again, I added my favorite Docs and a baseball cap. Life is about balance.
Ill cherish these last few days of "kale sweatshirt" weather-- I have a feeling itll be over pretty soon.

A C C E S S O R I E S Favorite Footwear
Dear shoes,
The fact that youre not getting picked as often anymore in the morning doesnt mean I dont love you the most. I am leaving you safely in the wardrobe to protect you from the muddy boots in the busy trains that will damage your delicate materials and the splatters coming off the wet concrete as the wheels of my bike ride over it. Just knowing that I have you guys (and I recognize that this is a strange form of greed), is enough for me; I dont even mind wearing the wrong shoe.
Every single pair of these involved a search, a long wait, the feeling of -if only I had this pair in to complete this outfit- in the morning and lastly; finding them on a strange corner of the internet or coming across them on an unexpected place. So happy to have this little collection, this is my favorite footwear.

5 of our Favorite Pioneer Day Traditions
1. Cook in a Dutch Oven: Believe it or not the Pioneers did bring their Dutch Ovens across the plains! You could do a main dish, side dish and/or a dessert in the Dutch Oven! We grilled chicken on the BBQ and made peach cobbler in our Dutch Oven. Here is my SUPER EASY recipe from my camp cooking class in college (I know).
Dutch Oven Peach Cobbler:
INGREDIENTS:
1 quart peaches (I use my home canned ones)
1 yellow cake mix
1 can Sprite
Pour in all ingredients in the order listed and do not stir. Then cook with 10-14 coals on both top and bottom until golden brown on top. Top with icecream or whipped cream.
*note: if you want the cobbler to be firmly set up (like a cake), you may want to drain 1/2 of the liquid from your quart of peaches. We like ours more juicy (like a warm pie) so we dont drain any juice.
2. Have a Taffy Pull: Last year, we did our Pioneer Day Taffy Pull out on the back patio using the gas burner on our BBQ grill. The weather was perfect and it saved my house from the mess! I found this recipe online and it is the recipe we used.
Salt Water Taffy INGREDIENTS:
1 1/2 cups sugar
3/4 cup light corn syrup
2/3 cup water
3/4 tsp. salt
1 tsp. vegetable glycerine (sold at most party or natural food stores)
2 tbsp. butter
4 drops each of red and blue food coloring
2 tsp. lemon juice
In a large saucepan, stir together the sugar, corn syrup, water, salt and glycerine with a wooden spoon. Cook over medium heat, stirring now and then until a candy thermometer reads 255 degrees. Stir in the butter. Divide the mixture into three equal portions. Mix red food coloring into one batch, blue into another and leave one plain. Pour each batch onto a greased flat pan and fold over the edges with a spatula to keep them from hardening.
When the candy is cool enough to handle, brush with lemon juice. Then, with well-buttered hands, each child can stretch one of the batches into a long rope until elastic (about five minutes). Finally, twist together the ropes, cut into pieces and wrap individually in waxed paper.
3. Have a Corn on the Cob Eating Contest: Anyone who dared, could enter this contest, at last years Pioneer Day Party! The rules were the contestant had to eat all of the corn from the cob, swallow and show an empty mouth, then run to the back fence and toss the cob over and run back to the finish line. It was pretty fun...and funny to watch!
4. Dress up! And Decorate a Wagon: We dug out our old bonnets, hats, and anything else we could use as Pioneer clothing. Then we made our stroller into a covered wagon. Just cover the open canopy using a white sheet and safety pins. Then attach brown strip of cardboard to the bottom with some brown or clear packing tape...it looked pretty good! (I wish I had a better photo but this is the best I had! The oldest cousins got elected to be the oxen...)
5. Play Pioneer Night Games: Last year the kids (I had my 3 and 5 cousins sleeping over) were outside until dark and they all started playing hide and seek, sardines, and capture the flag. I am not sure Pioneers played those exact games, but I remember thinking that I could certainly imagine the Pioneer kids playing in the warm dusky evenings before bed. I realized that my kids do not get a chance to play those simple games very often. I practically had to drag them all inside and it was after 11pm!
Those are some of the things that we did last year...5 more fun ideas that we are trying this year will be posted next week....

Since this illustration features a present wrapped in strings, and since it is a Holiday card and holidays are some of my favorite things, I think it is an appropriate entry for this weeks Illustration Friday. It really is much too early to be thinking about Christmas, but after working on these cards for a week I just cant help it. Now that they are finished, though, I need to focus on more pressing matters...

a few of my favorite things today
I am sick. Achy body, runny nose, sore throat, dog tired, sick. So I have been lazy today. Kade is having a movie marathon, and I am sipping green tea, reading books, and browsing the internet. Sounds like fun, right? Not so much fun when you swallow and your throat totally sticks together, and you cant breath because your sinuses are also stuffed up! At least I dont have what Jer has dubbed, "death disease," where his uvula (dangly thing in the back of his throat) puffed up 10 times the size its supposed to be. Are you grossed out yet?
So, I thought Id share some fun things I have found. They help make being sick a little more bearable.
I LOVE this owl fabric! I think it will be my next fabric purchase. I am afraid that I wont want to cut into it, though! That is problem with really cute paper, cute fabric, cute ribbon... I want to save it for something "really special" and then end up not using it. Im trying to break that cycle by not buying new craft supplies until I use what I have. But these owls might be the exception...
We (well, Kade technically) got a hamster from a friend for Christmas! He is a panda bear hamster named Po after this guy:
I havent got a real picture of Po yet, because he is only awake at night and I dont want to blind him with the flash. But, he is really cute, and VERY clean (seriously, he cleans his cage every day!), and pretty funny too. I was looking up some info about what treats hamsters can have, and came upon this video. Kade loves watching it! Cute!
Speaking of broccoli, Im going to make this broccoli cheese soup. So easy, and a great comfort food especially when youre not feeling well!
My SIL sent me a link to this awesome website! Its called Starfall.com. It is GREAT! Kade and I have already spent lots of time there already. We are mostly still working on the ABCs. Ive been adding in some of the level two little stories, for instance Zac the Rat is great to read after learning all about the letter A. They also have lots of other fun activities, movies, etc. They even have some really inexpensive journals and books you can buy too.
Lastly, my new favorite song. I dont usually like country very much, but this song is a bit country or folk, and I cant stop listening to it!
Jer is gone for the weekend at a Mens Retreat with our church. So tonight, I am going to make some soup and have a movie marathon of my own! See you next week!

Thankfully, I am the almighty arbiter in ascertaining what exactly constitutes a treat--whether you like it or not. The real question on my mind is, how do all of you get here? I didnt issue any personal handwritten invitations (at least not lately, you see, my calligraphy ink well has run dry), so many of you travel here through the magic of Google. I get about 400 daily visitors who stop by here via Google search, and through the magic of Google Analytics tracking data, Ive learned a great deal about what exactly brings people here.
In honor of the blogaversary I totally forgot about yesterday, I thought Id share with you just a few of the many, many hilarious search terms Ive seen in the past few weeks. Apparently the answer to how some of you got here involves some truly bizarre Googling. Dont worry, though, Im not here to judge. Actually, that was a boldfaced lie. My major purpose is to judge. All in good fun, and all that, but some of these just cant go unsnarked. It would be a disservice to the public to let them go without a brief mocking.
