A little homestead

Aaron and I have dreams of some day owning a homestead.
Somewhere our kids can roam freely and explore.

A place they can climb trees, build forts, pick berries and make friends with squirrels.

We want to have a big garden, a place for our chickens to free range and maybe even a cow or two.

Oh and lots and lots of fruit trees.

Theres such something about being in nature that is good for the soul.

All that clean, fresh air and constant reminders about what a good, big, majestic God we serve.

Its so refreshing.

So until we get our homestead we want to get out of our little city as much as possible and get into nature.

A few weeks ago we even bought a tent trailer to prove how serious we are about it :)

and so that it will be easier to go on weekend trips.

Because as much as we love tent camping its so much work to set up camp and then tear it down after only a day or two.

Have you guys heard of Joy Prouty or Wildflower Photography?

Her family sold everything they had, bought a big trailer and hit the road for a year of adventuring.

How cool is that?

Aaron and I tried to figure out a way to do that but the whole job thing kind of got in the way.

Darn.

A LITTLE MORE MOD

At the moment I feel very inspired by different takes on trends and just by peoples unique personal style. So I wanted to head to Shoreditch this time with a slightly smarter, slightly more mod ensemble, having picked up some pieces which were slightly more out of my comfort zone.

I adore the frill and femininity of this pussy-bow billowy shirt, I paired it with a much more structured button-down skirt and my new patent shiny-shoes which are from Topshop. These are so comfortable and after seeing so many Londoners strutting around in these boots looking effortlessly fabulous, I caved!

I was also so glad I could pull out my new Miu Miu Sunnies, They are very unique and distinctive. They almost feel a little futuristic and I almost wish I could wear the pink velvet box they came in as an accessory itself.

This outfit leant itself very well to the busy, work-day Old street vibe and has got me wanting to style myself up like this more often.

A little bit of sunshine Pineapple Papaya Juice

Thank you sun, for coming through the window today. You were missed.

Thank you pants, for being so forgiving after 2 nights of peking duck and crème brûlée.

Thank you butter, for making my kitchen smell so damn good.

Thank you legs, for not forgetting how to ride a bike and making me look sporty.

Thank you glasses, for allowing me to spot the bug on my mint. Now I know whos the owner of those black specks of poop on the leaves.

Thank you hand sanitizer, for killing (or claiming to kill) 99.9% of the germs.

Thank you fruit pickers/fruit deliverers/fruit sellers for making sure my pineapple and papaya were in a good state when I bought them.

This wonderfully healthy juice has just three ingredients (or four, I like to add chia seeds into everything and trick my family into eating them).

Papayas have the strangest seeds. Apparently edible too.

Freshly cut pineapples are the best (such a privilege to have non-canned pineapples!)

The mint is essential. Dont worry - the bug didnt get to all the leaves :)

Then you just whizz them together in a blender. Its like a bit of sunshine.

Voila, youre done!

Plain papaya or pineapple juice by themselves wouldve been well, just plain and boring. But together, they taste great and is a great way to kick-start any day that needs a bit of sunshine. Like everyday.

Pineapple & Papaya Juice
Adapted from Martha Stewart
Serves 2

5 sprigs fresh mint
1 pineapple, peeled and cut into pieces
1 medium papaya, peeled and seeded
1 tbsp chia seeds (optional)

1. Press all ingredients through a juice extractor into a measuring cup.

2. Stir to combine before serving.

I am hoping to be eating apple crumbles and snugging in bed to watch movies. But I really should go out and be more active like riding my bike and climbing some stairs.

A Little Bit of Genius at PAX

There were things I saw at Penny Arcade Expothat I wanted to go on about. Something besides Microsoft trying to push us into our exciting Windows 8/Internet Explorer 9 future by providing the world middling adaptions of ancient Atari games for some reason.

There was one game at the Indie Megabooth that deserves special attention from all humans. Not only was it funny, but it has perhaps the best elevator pitch in the history of the human race:

OK. Youre a guy living in the suburbs. You have a wife, two kids, and a secret: Youre actually an octopus in disguise.

Obvious jokes aside, how can you not want to try that game? Especially when you know its called Octodad: The Dadliest Catch.

Octodad!

This game is the purest epitome of the Indie spirit. (Hows that for a pull quote?) Its unique, intriguing, utterly bananas, and no major publisher will ever do anything like it.

Sadly, the gameplay is focused on maneuvering the octopus, which means struggling to do normally simple tasks with an odd control scheme. I am a little skeptical about how much this particular style of gameplay can catch on. On the bright side, if its priced cheaply enough, it can make a ton of sales based on the "Oh God. I have to try this out." factor.

My unsolicited advice for the developers: If the game turns out to not be that fun, sell it for five bucks. Youll move a lot of copies based on morbid curiosity alone.

Edit: Oh, yeah. You can support Octodad at Steam Greenlight here. I voted for it. KEEP INDIE GAMES WEIRD!

50 Little Goth Problems

I love being a Goth, dont get me wrong, but there are just some issues we tend to have to deal with that can be an extraordinary pain. Here are some of the ones that have been floating around my brain lately, with a peppering of snark.

Accumulating a Victorian-esque collection of artful clutter is all well and good until it comes to dusting it all.
When the only black lipstick you can find is dry and waxy or approximately $100,000 (plus shipping.)
Trying to color-match black clothing while online shopping.
Not really realizing how faded your hair has become until you dye it again.
Having internet friends that youd love to meet up with in person but they live waaaay too far away.
The Look you get when youre in school and a professor or teacher mentions Gothic literature and Architecture.
Wanting to have a parasol but not wanting to have to deal with carrying it the whole day.
Having unfinished DIY projects cluttering up your workspace but being unable to finish them for one reason or another.
Whenever you wear color there are always one or two people who act like it’s a personal attack on all they understand and hold to be godly and true in this world.
Every time you find the perfect pale foundation, it gets discontinued. Every. Time.
Having extremely high relationship standards because of Morticia and Gomez.
Eyeliner that melts or fades halfway through your day.
Not especially liking tea but wanting to have a tea party anyway.
Halloween is only really celebrated one day a year (however much you try to deny it and celebrate it every day.)
Breaking in new boots.
Having bought vinyl records before actually buying a record player.
Black nail polish being the easiest to tell when its chipped.
Feeling the need to stick up for the scene in the face of all the negative stereotypes even when you know full well some of those stereotypes are true.
Heat. Summer. Ugh.
Trying to find a way to Goth up little aspects of your daily life because it matters, damn it.
Pet fur. On everything.
Having Non-Goth interests is apparently a hard thing (for both Non-Goths and certain Goths) to understand.
Scuffs on black leather or patent shoes.
Not being able to understand the words to your favorite song because theyre either screamed or mumbled.
Becoming completely unstable in platform shoes.
Ripping the one pair of tights or stockings you actually wanted to remain intact.
Brushing your hair after you had it teased up and hair sprayed all day.
Being unable to find the particular black shirt you need in a closet/floordrobe full of black clothing.
Liking horror movies even though honestly 90% of them are completely terrible.
Having mixed feelings about Goth coming back into style because A) it means more Goth things easily found in stores but B) theyre insanely expensive again.
Worrying about walking at night because youre virtually invisible to cars.
Loving talon-style nails but being completely unable to keep up with them.
Looking back at your old babybat style and being slightly embarrassed.
If you eventually tire of black hair, needing tons of salon appointments or bleach bottles to get back to a lighter shade.
How many of your favorite Goth icons and favorite authors, musicians, artists, etc. have passed.
Black, blue, and purple lipstick making your teeth look yellow.
The shock on someones face when they see you without makeup for the first time.
When your google history looks like that of a serial killer because of simple curiosity.
People who are still waiting for you to grow out of it.
Accidentally ruining a favorite vintage clothing piece and knowing you wont be able to find a replacement.
When your velvet starts to bald.
Making a passing reference to the Goth Cabal or Goth Points and then having to explain that its a scene joke.
Having to wait for October to roll around to find your favorite decor accents and craft supplies in local stores.
Uneven eyeliner wings.
The scene in your town being too small and non-existent or too drama-prone.
The look someone gives you when you show them what Goth music actually is, not what they thought it was.
Wanting to wear that Joy Division t-shirt without being quizzed by music elitists to name all of their songs and the weather the day Ian Curtis was born.
Liking spider themed jewelry, not actual spiders.
When people make assumptions about what you like because youre a Goth instead of asking what you, as a person, actually like.
Always, every day: "Does it come in black?"

A Little Camera Practice

My sweet niece who is expecting a baby girl this month with her husband (yes, I am that old) was kind enough to let me practice taking some pictures of her and her gorgeous bump. Its been a pretty hot summer so I havent had too many chances to get outside and practice the skills I learned at this photography workshop until now. Ive got a long way to go but am having a blast with my new hobby and was thrilled to spend a late afternoon taking pictures of some of my favorite people. Thank you Brittney & Jeff for letting me play.

We cant wait to meet and love on the newest baby girl in the family!

A Little Celebration Cupcakes and Champagne Included!

What could be better then celebrating with cupcakes, champagne and friends? Here is a little party I put together with my April Ambassador box I received from The Flair Exchange. Take a look...

The Flair Exchange Ambassador kit for April included the "orchid" tassel garland, coordinating 17" confetti balloon and package of confetti. I created the "Dream, Create, Celebrate" poster in black and white and had it printed as a 18" x 24" "Engineer Print" at Staples. The quality isnt meant to be the best, it has a few small smudges, BUT it cost less then $2. I used assorted Copic markers to color in the flowers, framed it and love how it turned out. I also created matching favor tags to go along with my black "Swiss Dots" petal boxes and filled those with the purple foil wrapped Hershey Kisses (dark chocolate). Some other items I used (all found at Target) were rolls of black and white polka dot wrapping paper, white with black polka dotted paper straws, fresh purple tulips & floral decorated cupcakes. I truly love how this turned out and the reason for the little celebration is even better, but I will share what that is later this month.

A Little Bit of History

Here is a little self- portrait of me circa 20 years ago.

Ive spent months trying to come up with the right words to express myself in this post, but I still dont think I can do it justice. Simply put, life is wonderful. If you can dream it, you can do it.
20 years later, that little girl gets to stroll into the Walt Disney Animation Studios every day and walk among giants. It doesnt get much sweeter than that.
I sincerely thank everyone who has ever given me support, and if you are reading this, that includes you. Thank you, thank you, from the bottom of my heart, thank you.

I havent quite gotten settled in the new job yet, so posts might be sparse for a while. I will do my best to keep up, but please forgive me if I am a little slow. I will still be heading out to conventions, including Emerald City Comic Con in Seattle next weekend! If you are in the area you should definitely stop by! And after that I will be back in the Bay for Wondercon! If you have a chance to come to either show, please do. Until then, ta ta for now!

Another in my series of pastels outfit posts! This one is actually proving to be the most popular of the four in my Pastels For Spring Look Book video. It has definitely made me excited to film more of this type of video, I just hope we have a hot summer so I can get in the garden more!!

I absolutely LOVE these shorts from Zara, ive been wearing them with tights but I think ill enjoy wearing them with bare legs through the summer, and the H&M wedges are the perfect shoes to pair them with! Ive almost bought these from H&M about 50 times and always stop myself, but the other day I finally gave in and got them, I dont know why I didnt sooner as I love them!

A little health update

A bunch of you have been asking about my health so I thought Id give you a little update...

although there isnt a whole lot to update you on (but I guess thats a good thing!).

Praise God I havent had any episodes in almost 6 months!

This is by far the longest I have gone episode free.

Yippee!

The doctors wanted me to redo a bunch of big scans/tests including the radioactive Octreotide Scan a month after Hudson was born but since I have been feeling great and the tests are so inconvenient (I cant be around the kids for a few days, cant feed the baby for 2 weeks!, etc.) we decided to redo some blood work and other non invasive tests first.

The tumor marker that came back really high a few months ago had gone down a bit (probably because Im no longer pregnant) but is still much higher than normal.

Im still waiting on another test result before I meet face to face with the doctors to see what our next step is but for now it sounds like they still want me to redo the scans. We will see though.

Whatever happens the Lord has been meeting me and ministering to me in such a sweet way during this season. During one of the sessions of the womans retreat with our church our speaker Margaret Ashmore taught on the sovereignty of God. It was so. so. good and such a great reminder that God uses everything that happens for our good and His ultimate glory. Whatever happens Ive already seen God use this mystery disease for my good and Im trusting that He is and will be glorified through it.
