Once upon a time (like 10 years ago) I was attending a wedding. I was wearing a little black dress and needed a colorful clutch to finish off my outfit. I couldnt find anything I liked in stores so I grabbed one of my paintings from the wall, ripped it off the stretcher bars and sewed it into a clutch. This moment changed my entire creative perspective and my business forever!! I went on to write a book about remixing canvas, I taught classes on "redefining" your art and I sold thousands of handmade canvas bags. A few years ago I had to scale back on making bags- I just couldnt keep up with the demand .
These days I still make them just in smaller quantities and I am happy to announce that I have a fresh batch in the shop HERE. They always sell out fast so get em while you can!

3x3 Canvas finished!
I finally finished "Scaled Up #1". The process is discussed here and here. I wanted to see what would happen if I tried to scale up a small piece (10"x10") into a large piece (36"x36"). It was an interesting journey.

Works pretty well, I think. I am reluctant to say that a piece has to work in black and white in order to work in color. For example, some of the colorfield painters work depends on values being very similar. See my post about that here. However, value range is one thing to look at if your piece is not working. Here is a previous stage of Scaled Up, which I discussed in this post, along with its desaturated version:
Desaturating the piece in Photoshop was just one way to get a fresh view of the piece. And just for kicks, lets look at the original piece on which this is based, which is called "Grid #7":
Just another look at the piece. I think the black and white version could us a little more black. But I like the actual version. It is 10"x10", acrylic and collage on panel, and is available in my online gallery.

Happy Monday! Hope you had a fabulous weekend :) Hockey madness has begun here - with two kids playing and a third swimming competitively, we are officially outgunned, lol.
What about that title? Sounds impossible, right? Well, what if you thought of your art as a place to simply add a bold splash of colour, and painted out a huge canvas in a solid shade? Thats exactly what this is - a canvas painted out black, as found on Rue. It becomes part of the composition, grounds the whole wall, and functions as decor. Almost like colour-blocking a wall, but so much less permanent, and really, you could change this with the seasons if you wanted - a deep merlot for winter, a beautiful azure for summer, etc...
Thats about as much time as I have to make art these days! You? Thoughts?
